Symphonic Winds

The CWRU Symphonic Winds, under direction of Dr. Ryan Scherber, is the University concert band open to all CWRU & CIM undergraduate and graduate wind, brass and percussion players by audition (see below for more detailed information).  An audition is required for seating and section placement each academic year.   At times, this group may be reduced to one on a part as a wind ensemble for works requiring transparency and nuance.

This exceptional group of students is comprised of both music majors and non-majors.  Symphonic Winds is dedicated to the performance of the most advanced repertoire written for the wind band medium.  They rehearse 90 minutes per week on Monday and Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and generally perform two concerts each semester.

Spartan Marching Band

The CWRU Spartan Marching Band is a spirited ensemble of wind and percussion musicians.  The Band performs at home football games during the fall semester.

The group rehearses Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and before home games on Saturdays. Even though rehearsal time is limited, the band has been successful in producing lively, entertaining and musical marching performances while serving as a catalyst for school spirit. The emphasis is on having fun within the context of a traditional marching band format.

The marching band is an official class (MUEN-384) offered at Case Western Reserve University.  Participation in the band can fulfill the physical education requirement.  This group offers the opportunity for meeting new friends and an artistic release from the rigors of studying.

Membership in the Spartan Marching Band is available to current CWRU students who play wind or percussion instruments and are enrolled in MUEN-384. All interested persons should contact the director. Auditions are not required for wind musicians, however auditions are required for the SMB Drumline, please review the requirments using the link to the right. Please see the pre-season training schedule for details pertaining to the audition date.
